Equality and Diversity in the Workplace

It's political correctness gone mad!

Or is it?

Imagine going in to work and being discriminated against for being a woman, because of your age, or because of where you were born. Legislations and laws have been put in place to ensure that everyone has the right to work in an environment that is free from discrimination and that this does not happen.

The main legislation

The main legislation that we look at with Equality and Diversity is the Equality Act 2010. This act give protection from discrimination for people who fall under the “protected characteristics”. These are:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage or civil partnership
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

It doesn’t take a lot to ensure that the laws protecting people from discrimination are followed and that all of your employees are sticking to these.

Having a policy in place and training your employees about Equality and Diversity can help your business, make your employees feel that they work in a discrimination free environment, and give you more protection from having Employment Tribunal claims.

Not having these things in place can leave you open to discrimination claims at an Employment Tribunal – and there is no cap on the amount of money a Tribunal can award an employee if the Judge thinks that they have been discriminated against.

No policy in place? No training for your employees? No problem! We can help!
